Prior to the British rule, it was a colony of France, and in 1979 it became a sovereign state of the Commonwealth of Nations.

In June 2006, an organization known as Disabled People International (DPI) held a seminar on ?Inclusive Tourism in the Caribbean Region? in St. Lucia, and is actively working to make St. Lucia an accessible tourist destination. Another such organization is the St. Lucia National Council for Persons with Disabilities.
It would be advisable to inform the concerned parties about the arrival of a disabled tourist to the Caribbean Islands so that arrangements can be made beforehand. This includes the airlines through which they are going to travel and the hotel where they will stay over the holidays. This way, special arrangement can be planned out for them in advance.
