Lanzarote is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Spain. Welcoming over 1.5 million foreign tourists last year alone. With the bulk of these visitors heading for a holiday in Puerto del Carmen, the islands oldest and most popular resort.
Puerto del Carmen started life as La Tiñosa – a quiet little fishing village where little stirred the locals beyond the catch coming in at the end of the day. All that has changed drastically over the last forty odd years however. As this same spot is now home to a modern and bustling resort and the bulk of the best accommodation in Lanzarote.
Indeed there’s an excellent selection of villas in Puerto del Carmen (1) available for rent. With the bulk of these located in and around the Old Town harbour area – which is the spot where tourists first stayed when visiting the island during the early days of the 1960s´. With the best of these properties located in the upmarket enclaves of Risco Prieto.
For those who prefer to avoid cooking and cleaning on holiday there’s a large selection hotels in Puerto del Carmen (2) too. Encompassing everything from budget establishments through to five star luxury.
The driving force behind Puerto del Carmen’s success as a resort is undoubtedly the quality of the beaches. Some of which area admittedly man made with sand bought in from the Sahara – located just 100 km or so away on the African mainland.
That doesn’t in any way detract from the beauty of beaches such as the aptly named Playa Grande though. Which is the main focal point of the resort. Its 4km long sweep of golden grains providing the ideal environment for beach lovers of all ages. Especially children, as the sand here shelves gently into the ocean.
There are also a number of other excellent, smaller beaches dotted around. Such as the small sheltered bay at Playa Chica and the tucked away sands of Playa Fariones, located just in front of the hotel of the same name but open to the public.
There’s never been a better time to visit Puerto del Carmen as the resort has recently had over €16 million lavished on it by the local authorities. Who are keen to keep improving facilities here so the resort remains completive and attractive.
Some of these monies were spent on creating a new marina in the Old Town Harbour area. As well as n creating a better promenade along hr main seafront.
