Portable folding hammocks should be a great part of everyone’s life. One can make use of them anyplace … on your porch, the beach, your garden, camping, in the playground, as a spare bed, even in your office for a quick power nap. They make considerate and lifelong gifts (just make sure it’s a DOUBLE hammock for wedding gifts!). Portable hammocks are honestly one of the splendors of the world.
But one should be wary. Not all outdoor hammocks are created equal.
Here Are Some Things One Must Consider:
-How much does it weigh? (If one needs to carry it any distance, this might be important. I on one occasion went on a 2-week camping and climbing trip to the Tetons in the U.S., and we had to carry in a LOT of gear. There was nothing worse than the heavy hammock I had to carry! One day, I was climbing a 1500 foot face wearing my backpack and “portable” hammock and hammock stand. When I was roughly two hundred feet from the summit, I basically ran out of strength. I remember just standing on a tiny crevice, with no hand or finger holds, and wondering what I was going to do. I had an inexperienced climber belaying me, my pack was too heavy, and, unfortunately, I could not jettison anything because there were climbers below me. Fortunately, after pausing there for what seemed an eternity, my strength returned and I was able to climb to the peak of the mountain. Lesson learned? From then on I only brought the lightest portable hammock I could find!
-Does it include a case?
-Does it include a pillow?
-How much weight can it support? How many bodies do you expect it to hold? Might you sometimes utilize the hammock as a double?
-How long is it? (I’m 6’4″, there’s not anything worse than one where my feet dangle off the end!)
-Is the hammock frame variable for children and adults?
-Is it easy to set up?
-How difficult is it to tear it down?
-Does it need tools? (Not good if it does require it, in my opinion.)
-Does it boast an easy folding & locking system?
-What materials is it constructed of? Is it high quality? Long-lasting?
-What material is the stand made out of?
-Will it last long getting damp? (One new buyer alleged her two-week old hammock stand was starting to rust!)
-Does it freely swing? (A key issue for many – it’s hard to picture a hammock that doesn’t freely swing, but maybe that’s just my point of view!)
-What’s the bottom line on cost?
-What kind of guarantee does it offer?
-If you are purchasing on the internet, what is the cost of shipping? Is there a return policy?
Here is a hint … PRICE should NOT be your most important issue. This is a product that should last the remainder of your life, a few extra dollars at this point is probably worth your getting the finest portable folding hammock.
