There´s rarely been a better time to visit Lanzarote. As this small Canary Island can now be reached for as little as £9.99. Thanks to the introduction of genuine low fares on this route courtesy of the cheap flight specialists Ryanair. Who have switched their focus to the Canaries this winter in order to take advantage of the suspension of Spanish airport charges.
This move has been taken by the Spanish government in tandem with the airport authority AENA in order help revive the country’s flagging tourist sector. Which has been hit hard by the current recession – allied with the deprecation of sterling against the euro. Which has resulted in more British travellers – Lanzarote´s number one market – heading for destinations outside the euro zone such as Egypt and Turkey this autumn half term.
Either way, Lanzarote remains a very attractive winter sun destination. Thanks in no small part to the fact that the island will be enjoying temperatures in the early 20´s Celsius whilst British residents are tucking into their roast turkey. And boasts over 100 excellent beaches. All just four hours flying time away.
During the winter months the south of the island enjoys better and more reliable weather than the north – despite measuring jus 60km by 40km. So it’s best to plump for either the resort of Playa Blanca or Puerto del Carmen.
Playa Blanca is located right at the bottom tip of Lanzarote and is the newest resort on the island. Created as recently as the 1990´s. Which means that most of the amenities and facilities there are still as good as new. There’s a delightful seafront promenade that unites the whole resort and lots of high quality accommodation options. With plenty of good value four star hotels arrayed along the coastline. All enjoying great views across to Fuerteventura, just 12km away across the Bocaina Straits.
Puerto del Carmen feels a bit more downmarket than Playa Blanca. Which can be attributed to the fact that this is the oldest resort on the island. And also focuses more on budget accommodation such as apartments and apart hotels.
During the Christmas break for example it is still possible to pick up a weeks accommodation for two people here for under £250.
Local tourist authorities are also investing heavily in the resort – to the tune of €16 million. Which is being spent to upgrade facilities and contemporise the tourist offering.
Both resorts offer excellent value in the current climate however. With Playa Blanca home to the best selection of holiday villas in Lanzarote. Whilst Puerto del Carmen is the top spot for Lanzarote holiday apartments.
